Trying to hang on to luck was like trying to catch smoke with your bare hands. It left you exhausted, disheartened, and smelling like burnt toast; or maybe that last one just came with working at a hole in the wall diner with a miserable cook who burned almost everything he touched.
Regardless of unsatisfactory culinary skills, luck always had a way of disappearing almost as soon as it arrived. Last night's white knights had been such as wonderfully lucky experience, and then of course, their matron, Miss Mitzi May had made Charlotte feel like she was on the high end of society
